Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), known by her stage name Katy Perry, is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Born in California to pastor parents, she grew up listening to gospel music and singing in church. Perry rose to fame in 2008 with her breakthrough single "I Kissed a Girl".
Perry began with an on-and-off recording career, having been dropped three times by record labels. After signing to Capitol Music Group in 2007, she released her first mainstream album, One of the Boys. It contains the worldwide hits "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot N Cold".

Early life
Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California, United States.[1] The middle child of two pastors, she has an older sister and younger brother.[2] She was a born again and sang in their church.[1] Her Evangelical mother, Mary Hudson, grew up in Southern California, and had "a tempestuous first marriage in Zimbabwe".[2] Her dad was a West Coast scenester in the 1960s.[2] She grew up listening to gospel music[3] and was not allowed to listen to secular music.[4]
She got her GED after her freshman year of high school and left to pursue a career in music.[5] Among her musical influences are Alanis Morissette,[6][3] and pop rockers Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett and Shirley Manson.[7]
Perry dated Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy on and off for several years. After more than a year of friendship and casual dating, they became serious with their relationship right before they embarked into the 2008 Warped Tour. Perry and McCoy broke up in December 2008.[8]
Career
2001–2007: Career beginnings
At age around 14 and 15, Perry started going to Nashville, Tennessee to record gospel songs. At that time, she learned from country music vets on how to craft songs and play guitar.[4] Perry signed to record label Red Hill, under which she recorded her first album at age 15.[9] Using her real name, Katy Hudson, she released the self-titled Gospel album in 2001.[2] The album was unsuccessful, however, after the label ceased.[9] Perry tried again at 17, working with Glen Ballard on an album for record label Island Def Jam that was due for released in 2005.[1][9] Billboard magazine reported the album also went nowhere.[9] Perry and Ballard worked together for three years; she was dropped by Island Def Jam.[2] Some of the collaborations included "Box," "Diamonds" and "Long Shot," which were released on Perry's official MySpace page. "Simple", one of the songs she recorded with Ballard, was released on the soundtrack to the 2005 film, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
Trying her luck, Perry signed to Columbia Records in 2004. However, the label was not amenable with her vision, not putting her in the "driver's seat".[9] Instead, one of Columbia's ideas was to pair Perry with the record production team The Matrix, who was working on an album, to serve as its female vocalist. Although the album was shelved,[6] she caught attention of the music press: Her burgeoning music career led to her being named "The Next Big Thing" in October 2004 by Blender magazine.[9][1] With no album project ongoing, Perry began recording her own. Eighty percent completed, however, Columbia decided not to finish it and dropped her off the label.[9]
While waiting to find another label, she worked in an independent A&R company called Taxi Music. In 2006, Perry is featured in the tail-end of the video to P.O.D.'s single "Goodbye for Now".[10] She made a cameo appearance on Carbon Leaf's video, "Learn to Fly", and on Gym Class Heroes' video, "Cupid's Chokehold", playing the eventual love interest for her real-life boyfriend, lead singer Travis McCoy. Her songs eventually captured the attention of Virgin Records CEO Jason Flom, then head of Capitol Music Group, who signed her to Capitol Music in early 2007.[9] She changed her surname to Perry, which is the maiden of her mother, because "Katy Hudson" was too close to film actress Kate Hudson.[11]
2008–present: One of the Boys
After signing to Capitol Records, Perry began recording for her official mainstream debut album, and establishing her image was one of the immediate concerns of her management. A campaign was started in November 2007 with the release of the video to "Ur So Gay", aimed at introducing her to the market. A digital EP was later released to create online buzz.[9] This was a successful move that resulted in bringing Perry to the attention of Madonna,[9] who mentioned her on KISS FM and KRQ's JohnJay & Rich morning show in Arizona. as well as another mention on Ryan Seacrest's Morning Show. On March 10, 2008, she appeared as herself on the ABC Family television series, Wildfire, on the episode "Life's Too Short".
While the buzz over Perry was building, she went on the next step of promoting the album, undergoing a two-month tour of radio stations. The album's official lead single, "I Kissed a Girl", was released on May 6, 2008. With the song climbing atop the charts, Perry embarked on the annual Warped Tour music festival, which her management used to "establish her as a credible performer and make sure she wasn't seen as just a one-hit wonder".[9] The single was a commercial success, peaking at number one for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.[9] The song has since become a major worldwide hit, topping charts in 20 countries,[6] including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. On June 12, 2008, Perry appeared as herself on the daytime soap opera, The Young and the Restless, who poses for the cover of the fictional magazine, Restless Style.
The full-length album, One of the Boys, was released on June 17, 2008. As of February 2009, the album has sold over 800,000 copies in the United States.[9] The album has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.[12] Perry released her second single, "Hot N Cold", which gave her second top five single in dozens of countries around the world, including the United States where it reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100,[9] as well as topping the charts in Germany, Canada and Denmark. After Perry wrapped up her appearance at the Warped Tour, she went on tours in Europe. She later launched her first headlining tour, the Hello Katy Tour, in January 2008.[9] "I Kissed a Girl" earned Perry a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards.[13] Perry was nominated in five categories at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Female Video.[14] She won Best New Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, in which she co-hosted,[15] and Best International Female Artist at the 2009 BRIT Awards.[16] On February 9, 2009, both "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot N Cold" were certified three-time platinum by Recording Industry Association of America for digital sales of over three million.[17]
The self-titled debut album of The Matrix, which features Perry, was later released via the team's label, Let's Hear It, during when she was in the midst of her solo tour. When the release date was scheduled, "I Kissed a Girl" had been charting well. Matrix member Lauren Christy spoke to Perry about the decision, but she wanted to wait until the fourth single off One of the Boys had been dispatched. Despite their communication, The Matrix was released on January 27, 2009, via iTunes Store.[18]
Themes
Perry is known for her unconventional style of dress, often humorous, bright in color, and reminiscent of different decades, as well as her frequent use of fruit-shaped accessories, mainly watermelon, as part of her outfits. Her fashion caught the attention of designers, who were calling her even before the release of "I Kissed a Girl".[7]
Perry's songs, particularly "Ur So Gay" and "I Kissed a Girl", have generated controversies upon their release. The songs have have received reactions from religious and gay sectors.[19] Perry responded to the controversy surrounding "Ur So Gay": "It's not a negative connotation. It's not, 'you're so gay,' like, 'you're so lame,' but the fact of the matter is that this boy should've been gay. I totally understand how it could be misconstrued or whatever ... I wasn't stereotyping anyone in particular, I was talking about ex-boyfriends."[20]
In June 2008, Perry emerged in a publicity photo in which she pose clasping a switchblade.[21] Anti-knife campaigners criticized her for glamorizing knives.[22] The shoot was defended as an effort to give Perry a "sexy, harder edge".[22]
In December, Perry apologized to British singer Lily Allen for remarks in which she called herself a "skinnier version" of her, saying she meant it as a joke.[23] Allen retaliated and told a British radio station that she "happen to know for a fact that she was an American version" of her because their record company needed "to find something controversial and 'kooky'" like her.[24]

Anak Buah Yang Berani
Para Jendral besar sedang berkumpul di kapal induk militer AS yg sedang berlayar di laut lepas, ketiganya berasal dari negara yg berbeda dan sedang menyombongkan kehebatan pasukan negaranya masing2.
Jendral pertama yg dari Rusia memanggil anak buahnya, kemudian anak buahnyaitu disuruh berenang keliling kapal, lalu setelah selesai
jendral Rusiaberkata: “lihat kan prajurit kami,walaupun banyak hiu tapi dia tetapberani menantang bahaya”
Jendral AS gak mau kalah, dia panggil anak buahnya dan disuruh berenang keliling kapal 5x, setelah selesai dia pun membanggakan prajuritnya yg lebih berani dari prajurit Rusia.
Jendral Indonesiapun gak mau kalah, dia panggil anak buahnya dan disuruh keliling kapal 10 x.
Tiba2 anak buahnya berteriak pada jendralnya :
“pak, lo bego apa udah gila? ini kanbanyak hiunya tolol” lalu anak buahnya angsung pergi.
Jendral Indonesia senyum2 sumringah dan berkata sama ke-2 jendral lainnya: ” liat tuh, berani kan ? mana ada anak buah lo yg berani
membangkang dan ngatain atasannya?”

Dari pengamatan saya terhadap keseharian yang saya temui, saya dapat
menyimpulkan satu hal: Tuhan memang serba bisa, tapi Dia tidak pintar
matematika. Kesimpulan ini bukan tanpa dasar lho. Banyak bukti empiris yang
mendukung kesimpulan saya ini.
Sebagai seorang “fresh graduate”, saya tak mungkin mengharapkan
penghasilan tinggi dalam waktu sekejap. Terlebih karena saya memegang
prinsip bahwa hal yang terpenting dalam bekerja adalah kepuasan hati. Saya
lebih memilih pekerjaan yang mungkin tak segemerlap pekerjaan yang dipilih
teman-teman seangkatan saya, tapi mampu “memuaskan” idealisme saya.
Saya memang sangat mencintai dan menikmati pekerjaan saya saat ini. Tapi
saat saya berbincang dengan seorang teman yang bekerja di ibukota, ia
mulai membandingkan penghasilan kami (dari sisi finansial tentunya). Jelas
saja saya kalah telak darinya.
Saya sempat jengkel sebentar. Bagaimana tidak. Selama bermahasiswa,
sepertinya prestasi kami sejajar, bahkan saya lebih dahulu lulus ketimbang
dia. Tapi kenapa Tuhan tidak menitipkan rejeki yang sama besarnya dengan
yang dititipkan pada teman saya ini?
Tapi, begitu saya merenungkan kembali segala kebaikan Tuhan saya menemukan
satu hal yang luar biasa. Ternyata penghasilan saya yang tak seberapa itu
cukup untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari saya, bahkan untuk mengirim adik
ke bangku kuliah. Padahal logikanya pengeluaran saya per bulannya bisa
sampai dua kali lipat penghasilan saya. Lalu darimana sisa uang yang saya
dapat untuk menutupi kesemuanya itu? Wah, ya dari berbagai sumber. Tapi
saya percaya tanpa campur tangan-Nya, itu semua tidak mungkin.
Nah, ini salah satu alasan mengapa Tuhan tidak pintar matematika. Lha wong
seharusnya neraca saya sudah njomplang kok masih bisa terus hidup.
Bukti kedua adalah kesaksian seorang teman. Ia mengaku kalau semenjak
lajang, penghasilannya tidak jauh berbeda dengan sekarang. Anehnya, pada
saat ia masih membujang, penghasilannya selalu pas. Maksudnya, pas akhir
bulan pas uangnya habis. Anehnya, begitu ia berkeluarga dan memiliki anak,
dengan penghasilan yang relatif sama, ia masih bisa menyisihkan uang untuk
menabung. Aneh bukan?
Berarti kalau bagi manusia 1 juta dibagi satu sama dengan 1 juta dan 1 juta
dibagi dua sama dengan 500 ribu, tidak demikian bagi Tuhan.
Dari kesaksian teman saya, satu juta dibagi 3 sama dengan satu juta dan
masih sisa. Betul kan bahwa Tuhan itu tidak pintar matematika?
Ah, saya cuma bercanda kok.
Buat saya, kalau dilihat dari logika manusia, Dia memang tidak pintar
matematika. Mungkin murid saya yang kelas 2 SD lebih pintar dari Dia. Tapi
satu hal yang harus digarisbawahi: MATEMATIKA TUHAN BEDA DENGAN MATEMATIKA
MANUSIA.
Saya tidak tahu dan mungkin tidak akan pernah sanggup mengetahui persamaan
apa yang digunakan Tuhan. Tapi kalau boleh saya menggambarkan, ya
kira-kira demikian:

Ya, Tuhan selalu mencukupkan apapun kebutuhan kita. Tanpa kita minta pun,
Dia sudah “menghitung” kebutuhan kita dan menyediakan semua lewat
jalan-jalan- Nya yang terkadang begitu ajaib dan tak terduga.
Menyadari hal itu, saya bisa menanggapi cerita teman-teman yang “sukses”
dengan penghasilan tinggi di luar kota dengan senyum manis. Soal
penghasilan Tuhan yang mengatur. Untuk apa saya memusingkan diri dengan
berbagai kekhawatiran sementara Dia telah menghidangkan rejeki di hadapan
saya?
